Men’s Work

Men’s work is a calling you get the first time you find yourself sitting in a circle hearing stories that remind you very specifically of what it’s like to live as a man. There are things you wish you could talk about in open groups but try as you might, it never seemed right to talk about.

Men’s work refers to all the ways men have found to create spaces where they can open up. It encompasses talk therapy, sharing circles, warrior weekends, bonding activities and pretty much any intentional gathering that is crafted as a safe space, a sacred space where men can trust each other and open up.

I have been attending and creating men’s weekends and men’s circles for over 14 years. As a staffer at men’s retreats, I lead by example and demonstrate how it’s ok to help and be helped. These are often initiatory weekends where men undergo a ritual separation from their usual lives. A very long time ago, we as a society lost our initiation rites. With the advent of the industrial age, men were no longer at home and boys paid the price of losing the presence of male elders during their formative years.

As a facilitator of men’s circles, I foster safe containers where men can be vulnerable and talk about relationships, hopes, fears, family, work and especially aging in a man’s body. I attend circles as a member, lead circles, and teach men how to start and lead their own circles. My circles are open to all males and male-identifying persons, regardless of society’s body assumptions.
